“I placed a security camera fitted with a telephoto lens on the terrace of my apartment and connected this live video feed to the exhibition space in DRC No. 12. The video images show the everyday life of an unfamiliar village: people drawing water or washing clothes, cattle and villagers leaving or returning, men and women working in the field, children playing, occasionally boring soldiers fighting each other for fun. Because of the great distance, I had to imagine relationships between the protagonists, conjure up their conversations and visualize the invisible lives inside the houses. I am fascinated by this serene stage, the naturally controlled scenes and spontaneous acting. It is an unending drama, year in and year out” (Zhao Liang)
Etymologically, the word “boundary” means frontier or border, referring to fixed physical demarcations between different countries, regions, cities and places. It could also mean, broadly speaking, mutable border-lines that at once separate and connect different identities, ways of thinking, human and cultural activities. As a “documentarist” throughout the entire project, Zhao Liang combines live streaming video, broadcasting, short documentary films and installations to accomplish his own artistic transgression of boundaries in DRC. No 12. “I didn’t purposefully choose a specific medium. I always intuitively determine the appropriate medium based on subject matters and the need for forms of expression” (Zhao Liang)
